The Avengers: A Celebration

The Avengers: A Celebration

by Marcus Hearn - 2010; foreword by Patrick Macnee

The Avengers: A Celebration is an art book celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Avengers. It is a large format hardback highlighting the best of the images from the archive at Pinewood Film Studios. Under Marcus' creative guidance, they sorted through 10,000 negatives to find the best pictures for the book. They uncovered quite a lot of material that will be new to fans, and all of it has been meticulously digitally restored. Many of the pictures look as if they could have been taken yesterday.

For Marcus, it was a dream assignment: "Compiling a book to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this classic television series has been a labour of love. This is not a production history or an episode guide, as I feel that's already been done in previous books and Web sites. Instead we have created what I hope is a suitably stylish celebration of the show in pictures, with exclusive captions, comments and quotes from the people who actually made it. I was thrilled when Patrick agreed to participate. To many people Patrick IS The Avengers, and the book wouldn't have felt complete without his contributions". It is available from amazon.co.uk (Oct 29, 2010) and amazon.com (Nov 16, 2010).

Blind in One Ear: The Avenger Returns

Blind in One Ear: The Avenger Returns

by Patrick Macnee - 1992

The bowler hat. The rolled umbrella. The bespoke suit. Patrick Macnee is known to millions for his portrayal of that epitome of the English gentleman, John Steed, in the internationally successful television series The Avengers. Born of aristocratic parents, he went to prep school and Eton. But the conventions of the upper-class English life end there. Pa was a drunkard and a gambler; Mama was a lesbian, who moved in with her formidable lover Evelyn, bringing her bemused, be-kilted son with her. Expelled from Eton for running the school 'book', Patrick made his first tentative steps into the footlights. The limelight took a little longer; he did not achieve overnight cult status as John Steed until he was nearly forty. The rest, as they say, is history ...

Witty, inventive, bizarre and eccentric, Blind in One Ear is the extraordinary autobiography of an extraordinary man.

'Rich in anecdotes ... but what sets aside this book is the quality of Patrick's writing about his crazy childhood.' Mail on Sunday

Available at amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.

<The Complete Avengers

The Complete Avengers

by Dave Rogers - 1998

Since its first airing in 1961, The Avengers has become one of the most enduringly popular series in the history of television-reaching its height in the episodes where Patrick Macnee starred as the impeccable John Steed opposite Diana Rigg's strong, sensual Mrs. Peel. The Avengers' world was always full of upper-class derring-do, a place of distinctly elegant high jinks-all portrayed with tongue firmly in cheek.

Now, television historian Dave Rogers has assembled into one volume the complete history of this long-running program, from the early episodes featuring Ian Hendry, through the glory days of Diana Rigg, to The New Avengers and beyond. Drawing on extensive interviews with such Avengers cast members as Linda Thorson ("Tara King"), Patrick Newell ("Mother"), Honor Blackman ("Cathy Gale"), and, of course, Patrick Macnee - plus several of the show's writers; this volume provides an overview of the series, a complete, show-by-show episode guide, a comprehensive collectors' guide to Avengers memorabilia, more than 200 photographs of England's classiest crime fighters and an introduction by Avengers producer Brian Clemens.

So kick back, uncork a bottle of vintage '28, and relive the dashing adventures of England's high-class heroes! Available through amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.
