As a footnote to my previous email (birthday greetings for 6th February) you may be interested to know my family and I celebrated by watching one of my favourite episodes of The Avengers: "Dead Man's Treasure". Steed's Bentley kept pace with MGs TRs and Jags while Gareth Hunt (pre - Gambit)played the baddie giving Mrs Peel an electrifying time in Arthur Lowe's/ Captain Mainwaring's Grand Prix racing car! We raised a glass of bubbly (a la the opening title sequence)to Mr Macnee's health. |

Hi there Patrick a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY from one of your biggest fans. I am an ex-pat also living here in Florida I come from the North of England & I'm coming up soon to my 60th B-D it seems that you have been around all my life. I have followed your career very closely. As a small child watching you guys in The Avengers with Honor Blackman & that huge great Dane dog was great I thought the world would end when she left the programme. Then along came Di Rigg & oh my god did you two set the world on fire. As young teenagers we would race into school on Monday & get into a huddle & talk about your Sat night capers. Then when Touch of Brimstone aried well we talked about that all week. I loved you in Sleuth & you must have liked working with Roger Moore as you guys did a few things together I liked the Holmes & Watson you guys did. Well I'm toasting your B-D with a glass of champagne...here's to MANY more fab B-Days to come. You have done England proud & we love you. Hugs Pat Hudson

Happy Birthday!
I had the pleasure of meeting you in San Francisco when you were reading from "Blind in One Ear." You charmed the audience with your warmth, kindness, and of course, great stories from your remarkable life and career.
Thank you for bringing John Steed to life--only you could have matched Cathy Gale, Emma Peel, and Tara King. You were brilliant!
And beyond John Steed, thank you for so many memorable performances on stage, movies, and television---including Dr. Watson, Dudley Jericho, Captain Gibbon (Columbo), Norman Alexander (Alias Smith and Jones), David Worth (Magnum P.I.), and Cecil Hedley (Frasier). It was always great to see you in a different role--always believable in whatever part you were playing.
Best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy 2011.

Browsing the internet in a moment of insomnia, I have found this site. One of my favorite moments in television came from you in The Avengers. Steed was before a firing line of some paramilitary group when Ms. Peel came in to save the day and him. As she removed the blindfold, she asked whether your life passed before you facing the firing squad. Steed smiled broadly and said "Yes...marvelous" or words to that effect. That always stood out to me as a fantastic sentiment and a great aspiration, though hopefully the need for such quick soul-searching would never occur. From the little I have read about you, it is a sentiment that you share in your own life.
As it turns out, I have stumbled upon this on the eve of your birthday, which also happens to be my daughter's. Good health, best wishes and happy birthday. |

I want to congratullate Mr. Macnee for the next February 6th. and hope we see many more bithdays to come. A
friend of mine, from London, sent me the two seasons of "The Avengers" with Cate Gale, and I'm enjoying them now, together with the Emma Peel's seasons. Recently I had the opportunity to watch the Bond's "A View to a Kill" and the perform of Mr. Macnee as Mr. Godfrey Tibbett, caracter that sadly dies. For who is used to see "The Avengers", it was hard to see... Is also very sad to be the only enthusiast of "The Avengers" in a vast country in witch nobody even knows the main and so admired actors like you, Diana Rigg or Mrs. Blackman...
I always try enthusiastically to introduce the series to other, and some comes to be interested, but a few here can understand well english without help and loose the focus. I've been frustraded to the fact that no editor showed interest on publishing a special 50th. year's issue of the series, even only with subtitles in portuguese, as I suggested. I don't need them, but it never ever had been a brazilian version. But, I love you all anyway. My conglatullations again for you, Mr. Macnee, and all of yours.
From the only (it seems to be)admirer of "The Avengers" in Brazil, I'd like you to know that you will ever be needed.

Thank you, sir, for the years of delightful memories: both your part (literally and figuratively) in my family's yearly tradition of viewing the unmatched '51 film "A Christmas Carol", as well as those unique gems of my youth: all the episodes of "The Avengers". I must include another particularly personal memory: meeting you on a summer's day in 1980 during a break from your filming of an action film directed by Roger Vadim near New York's South Street Seaport Museum. I was an extra and you kindly obliged with an autograph for a dear friend. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not risk asking you (what may be, I fear, a tiresome enquiry) a question, the answer to which, has eluded film devotees for these past three score: who was that actress who played Scrooge's nephew's maid near the film's end? Other than George Cole (as the young Scrooge), one knows of no one else who might provide a clue, if not an answer. "Thanks a million for everything!" as my beloved late uncle (a Navy man) was fond of saying. |

I am a 21 year old girl and have just been discovering The Avengers during a tv revival in german-language countries. This show is timeless and one could never get bored of watching Steed and any of his partners fighting against evil! Besides being a thrilling and capturing "spy-fi-show", I am especially fond of the female roles which are amazing role models for girls of any age - for almost 50 years! This show was ahead of its time and still is in my opinion and it is a pleasure to watch it. Thanks to anyone who made it happen! (-:

As surprising as it may sound, John Steed, - epitome of Britishness in a 60's show - has ALSO been a role-model for a Parisian student born in the 80's - I mean : I never wore a bowler, and, well, an umbrella is not as necessary in Paris as in London - but the unique spirit of The Avengers has clearly been a constant inspiration for me since teenage years, and not only because it often deals with Champagne and Bordeaux. Thank you for being such a prodigiously-talented actor and for having such a great, fascinating and original personality ("Blind in one Ear" is my bedside book ). Thank you for existing, Mr Macnee - |

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed watching the show. Your John Steed character remains to this day the personification of Great British "cool". I'm sure the custom Jaguar you drove played a part in starting the craze for modifying cars!
