The quality, fun, and elegant style of The Avengers is sadly lacking today. I was young when The Avengers was on TV; it was past my bedtime, but I'd get up for a drink of water and, well, linger to the end of the show. I'm sure my parents knew I was at the back of the room.

I wonder if it would be technically possible now to recreate the "old" Avengers with the genuine voices but visual tricks a little like Weta did for Gollum (and Avatar). If not a full series even just a guest appearance in, say, Dr Who. After all, how the Doctor be embroiled in paranormal oddities when he pops up in the sixties without Steed and Emma getting wind of it and investigating? It just isn't logical for them to be omitted. :-)

Dear Mr Macnee,
In the sixties I was only 8 yrs old watching The Avengers (with subtitles)with Emma Peel; then I did not understand the British humour in it. Now I'm watching all the episodes again (without the subs) and enjoying them all over again.
Thank you so much for it; would be nice for the world to have such John Steed in it nowadays! Wish you good health and pleasure in what you're doing.
Love from the Netherlands, Helen

I really enjoyed your role in the Avengers series. I don't see the writing and the acting as good today as it was back then. I especially enjoyed when you were in a scene where you were in great danger, but treated it with coolness and humor. Thanks!

Patrick....I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much you have always meant to me. I was lucky to meet you & spend some time with you when you were performing Sleuth at the Pheasant Run Theatre in St Charles IL back in 1975.I worked there as a house manager and you were very kind. It has always remained a very important part of my life and you were in it. I am happy that you have led a happy and full life and you will remain in my thoughts & prayers. I have followed your career but your performance of Sleuth with Jordan Christopher remains my favorite. Happiness always.

OK! OK! OK! lets get this right from the start...John Steed is one of the greatest roles ever created on screen, and only one man could have pulled it off...and that's you Patrick!!!.I was just a kid when I used to revel in The Avengers(the Emma and Steed years...ahhhh golden).I used to get my mum to nip off to bingo on a Saturday night, I would be left baby-sitting my little brother and sister and we would all watch The Avengers together...BLISS ...thanks for all those brilliant memories. The originality of the series still shines through after all these years...I wish you good health

Greetings sir. I grew up watching you light up the screen, from the avengers, the new avengers to gavilan, not to mention the movies. It was certainly a treat watching you dispose of the bad guys in your own cool, sophisticated manner. Thank you very much for being such a good influence. You proved that the good guys can be more cerebral and less muscular. You did it without having to swear, being pleasant even to the villains. May you continue to enjoy good health and happiness.

Good Sir,

I wanted to drop an e-mail to wish you well and thank you for so many years of happy entertainment.
As a child growing up in the sixties I have many happy memories of watching "The Avengers" with my parents all those years ago. Now these days my wife and I still love to watch those programs as I have the complete DVD collection. On another note, I recall my parents telling me how much they enjoyed your excellent performance on Broadway in "Sleuth." How I wish I was able to see that performance.
Again thank you be well, be happy & be healthy!

Dear Patrick Macnee,

today, I visited our neighbours with my girls. The neighbours' grandma was also present, and I talked with her about the Avengers, and promised to give one of my Avenger-DVDs to her.
Later the husband arrived and when going home, I asked grandma:"Shall I fetch the DVD now?"
The host, without knowing what we were talking about, asked: "DVD? which DVD? I also like to get a DVD."
So I replied:"Its the DVD with the most handsome man of the world..." And grandma and I continued:"and with the most beautiful woman of the world" and my daughter (11years) guessed: "John Steed and Emma Peel?"

Three generations of women can hardly be wrong, can they?

I have been a big fan of The Avengers since 1966 when I was 11 years old. I have the series on vido and my wife and sons enjoy watching these shows with me. My oldest son is in Collegs studying acting and we all get a good laugh from the episode "Epic" but actually every episode was great. Your portayal of John Steed really needs to be seen by the young people of today. The character of Steed was a poised, refined, and polite Gentleman that demanded respect. I have to tell you that when i was in Jr. High I was so impressionable that I carried an umbrella to school even when it didn't rain. When class was dismissed I stood and let all the girls exit first before I left the room. It worked! The girls liked me!!! Diana Rigg was such a classy and beautiful woman with such wit and charm. The two of you were truly a team. Hope you are well and by the way today I am a Pastor. I don't always carry an umbrella but I am a gentleman. You inspired that!
Best to you and yours,
Pastor Steve Kirwin

Dear Patrick Macnee,

In 1969 when The Avengers aired in Germany I was five and John Steed was undoubtedly my first love. Now on DVD I enjoy the shows as much as I used to during my childhood days. My taste obviously hasn't changed much. The wealth of fantastic ideas and brilliantly written lines is so incredible and I wished modern writers shared only a fraction of it. But what at least for me makes The Avengers so special is your acting, the gestures and looks that make such a big difference. What a delightful change from the armies of faceless superheros.

I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy the spring.

Best regards,

Claudia

Greetings, Mr. MacNee:
In 1971 I was a student in London and rented rooms in their Wandsworth home from a couple, the male half of whom claimed to be a TV script writer who had worked on a number of "Avengers" episodes.

He described you as the consummate professional; that you always arrived on set with lines fully memorized, and were very patient with younger actors and their mistakes. That you mentored and encouraged them. In other words, a true gentleman - not unlike John Steed himself.

Finding this website has rekindled some 40-yr-old memories!

With kind regards and wishing you good health;

Bob
