Dear Mr Macnee, thank you for all those intriguing episodes of the Avengers. They were fantastic. I was 9 years old when your first series was broadcast in 1962. I remember rushing into our house to watch them when they were on the TV. You were smarter than James Bond, Danger Man and Simon Templar all put together. They don't make em' like that anymore!

I loved them all!

Thanks again,

Barry Fletcher.

Hello Pat!

First, belated happy birthday wishes! I hope it was a fabulous time for you.

Second, just wanted to tell you that, after growing up loving Avengers, I'm doing my thesis on Dandyism in television. John Steed (and your role in portraying his character) and the 1960s is my first chapter. I can honestly say without having grown up watching The Avengers, I might not have been inspired to research Dandyism.

Just wanted to tell you thank you for your role, indirect or not, in inspiring me to further my education and research something that I love!

Many happy returns to you, Patrick, and thank you again.

love to you always,

sunday

Good luck with your thesis

In 1965, I was 11 and watched The Avengers every week. Over the years, now with the Emma Peel Box set, I realize that every man wanted to be Patrick Macnee, dressed to the nines and all that chemistry with Diana Rigg.

To this day, The Avengers holds a special place for me.

Thanks for maintaining a communication with your fans, Mr Macnee and best wishes to you, Sir.

During a dutch TV interview show somewhere mid 1990's I remember you responded, a bit annoyed, to a question about what you were going to do for the rest of your life. As far as I can recall it was: It's easy for a young man like you to talk about the rest of your life but for a man my age the rest of my life could be today. At the time I thought it was witty, and obviously I remembered it. It only hit me this week when somebody asked me the same question and I automatically responded the same without thinking too much about it. But all of a sudden I do. You are a wise man. It should be everyone's motto from day one.
Cheers, Peter

Agente Speciale (The Avengers)e', a mio modesto avviso, la piu' bella serie televisiva mai messa in onda in Italia. Peccato che, come le solite cose fatte nel nostro bel paese, questa serie non fu trasmessa con continuita' e per intero.
Grande!!!!
P.S. vorrei tanto vedere le serie precedenti tradotte in italiano! sigh!!!

Amazing that my recent passion for British T.V. would take me back to where it all began for me as a child. I loved "The Avengers" as a child, along with some other bloke named Roger Moore in "The Saint." Both of these classics could be seen in syndication on Sunday afternoons from ITC productions. Great memories.

Dear Mr.Macnee,
I am sure that I read somewhere of your love of the Southwest of England, and in particular Dorset (the Bridport area). I grew up in that area. It is a very beautiful and spiritual area. One of my favourite places is an iron age hillfort, Eggardon hill, which has stunning views across the coast and onto Bridport. Did you ever discover this special place? I saw in the millenium up there in the mist; unforgettable.
I am a physician specialising in arthritis and chronic pain (hence the pseudonym). I worked in the beautiful city of Bath, which I am sure you will know. Perhaps you performed in the Theatre Royal. The Royal Mineral Water Hospital is just 100 yards up the road from there.
I now work in North London, not far from Elstree and Boreham Wood, which you will know very well. But I really miss the countryside and clean air of Dorset. How did you survive it?
Thank you for your wonderful work over the years. I am a lover of the voice, and have a very soft spot for your dulcet tones.
If you would like a photo of Eggardon Hill, or some stunning thermal images I took of Bath, let me know and I will be happy to oblige. Best wishes,HB

Dear Mr. Macnee, I have just recently rediscovered how much I loved "The Avengers" and have purchased several episodes on video! I always thought you were an extremely talented and very handsome man. I am enjoying watching the shows again, especially with your co-star, Diana Rigg.

I would like to know if you ever worked with Patrick McGoohan on any film project. I think he was also a gifted actor and I loved him as No. Six in "The Prisoner". Any thoughts about him? I do wish you well and I hope it's not too hot living in Rancho Mirage! (I lived in Palm Springs for two years...) Best regards from No. San Diego County, Ms. Vlasta F.

Answer:
Mr Macnee remembers Patrick McGoohan very well, and admired his work. As far as anyone can remember they did not actually act together.

He gave me the DVD of "The Avengers" and he told me to watch them in English because he knew no better teacher than Mr. Steed and Mrs. Peel (he loves your stories). I'll try to listen to his advice and I'll watch your adventures in English! So thank you very much!

It is fascinating to read that Sir Daniel Macnee was your great grandfather. I am an historian, specialising in the fine arts in Glasgow. I have a new book, due for publication later this year, which includes Daniel Macnee, and some of his sitters. It's great to know that you are one of his descendants. Kind regards, George Fairfull-Smith, Glasgow

Answer:
We'd love to buy a copy of your book when it is published! Apparently, Sir Daniel Macnee was a wonderful story-teller. Perhaps that was how he kept his sitters animated through the tedious hours of staying still for a portrait.

The Enduring Influence of Steed.

Dear Mr Macnee, I'm a young codger who was greatly influenced by the Avengers. I still like to see the good guy win and the bad guys get their just desserts. Life is the opposite of course. We haven't watched broadcast television for over 15 years since being exiled to Ireland from our roots in Glasgow. However, we had a video player, and when I saw some Avengers videos in a second hand shop, I grabbed them. My sons became instant addicts. Bill's 25th birthday is this coming Saturday. His younger brother, Mike, grabbed us on the way out for the weekly shopping and stuffed a bundle of cash in our mits with specific instructions to buy Bill 3 decanters "Like Steed has". They're on a slippery slope these boys.

I see you are ex RN. The training clearly worked for you. I was RAF, but I reverted to being "Low Bred", not even "Half an Oaf", at the end of my commission.

I would like to write to you personally on a more specific matter, but I realize that your privacy is important.

May I say that I hope you will, at the very minimum, comply with the recent Ministerial directive and live to an "Average" age of ninety five years.

May you also enjoy every minute, and continue inspiring people to be "One of the good guys".

It may be the losing side, but it carries no regrets.

All the best

Jim Cahill

Hi Patrick, a belated happy 90th birthday to you. As I have four cousins that are in their 90's now, I do have a great appreciation towards those reaching the advance stages of their lives! The Avengers was a series that is still dear to my fellow New Zealanders and I understand you made a few visits here as well as work on a film here at one stage in the late 1970's. I was wondering if you could tell me what the name of that film was and what some memories you have of my country during your visits here. Meantime chin, chin and keep your great spirits and health rolling along as you start to set your sites towards what cricketers would call, a century.
